The Necessary Skills to Become a Successful Designer (part 2)

  1. Responsive design

Mobile internet users have surpassed desktop internet users for several years. It is necessary for web designers to clearly understand responsive design and how it works. A successful designer must know how responsive design works and how to design for it while not every mobile website is responsive.

  1. Common design patterns

There are many common design patterns that users have come to expect on websites, including sidebars, header navigation, or copyright info in the footer. Users want to be able to find certain things in certain places, and designers have to carefully break those conventions to make sure that they don’t negatively impact user experience. As a designer, you will need to get familiar with these common design patterns to apply them to your own projects.

  1. Graphic design basics

Web designers have to know the way to create pleasing visual elements for a website or web app. Many graphic design basics like balance, hierarchy, harmony, etc. are applied to web design as much as they are applied to designs for print. If you want to be a successful designer, you should spend some time getting the fundamentals down solid.

  1. Typography

When it comes to the web, typography means not only how to combine different typefaces to create the look and feel that you want in your designs, but also how web fonts work as well as how to use them. You have to be well-versed in how to select the perfect typography, how to scale it, and how to use webfonts in your designs.

  1. Color theory

Color has such a big impact on the way users perceive a website. You can drastically change the impact that design has just by changing the color of a design from a muted blue to hot pink. Creating color palettes which can convey the right emotions is an important skill for any designer.
